When Sherrise and I got married, I knew my life would be full of lavish vacations, elegant dinners and tons of impromptu dates because we were of a certain age and had NO responsibilities. Well look at me now! I'm knee deep in diapers, juggling schedules and hearing mama mama mama 30 times a day.

For the first time in my lesbian life, I find myself having to navigate attending events based on the kids allowed or not allowed factor. I was one of those lesbians who appreciated going to a party where no kids were screaming their lungs out, having temper tantrums or running all over the place. Not only do I have to ask about bringing the kids, now I have to ask how many can come. "Excuse me, would you mind accommodating my party of five?" or "just the adults?" At first, I used to be offended with a "NO," but now I can happily respect the honest answer because that was once me hoping someone wouldn't bring their bad ass kids to my party.

With a household of toddlers and a teenager, mama June needs a break! My wife is great with managing the house on one of her very few days off, while I go let my hair down for a few hours. But guess what happens when get a second for some quality "me time" at the local beach or at someone's cute event? I'm surrounded by sand-throwing toddlers or chatting it up over cocktails about my babies that I left at home.

The irony of trying to escape the reality of family life only reminds me how much I love, appreciate and miss every crazy minute that they get on my last damn nerve. Plus, I know how to have a wonderful time at home with my party of five!!!
